long bicycle travels make you appreciate what you have at home. they also make you flatulent. we rolled off the train from flagstaff kinked up & feeling like the seats beat us up. the 26 hour trip was hard on our butts & backs. boy it is great to say goodbye to the desolate southwest .

    the idea of a crosscountry bicycle tour is easier than the reality. the southwest is desolate , windy, hot , cold, all at once. the part of america that is the worst to cross by bicycle is from the east side of the cascade/serria range to the 100th merridian. many long stretches of nothing. wow mountians are hard, well that is a understatement. 5mph up a mountian takes forever. for a racer who is used to going up much faster. that can hurt your ego. but when you are carring a load you are not going any faster.
